What is a Domain Backorder?
A domain backorder is a standing order you place with a service to register a domain name for you the moment it’s deleted and released to the public. The service watches the domain through expiration and deletion, then races to catch it at the instant it drops, with no refreshing or racing on your part.

More About Backorders
Backorders exist because you can't sit and refresh a registrar's search box for weeks. When a domain you want is taken, a backorder turns "hope the owner lets it go" into a placed order: it waits, then acts in a fraction of a second when the name finally becomes available. The diagram above shows the journey.
How does a domain backorder work?
You place the order with a backorder service, usually before the domain even drops, and the service monitors the domain's status from then on. If the owner lets it go, the name winds through the deletion timeline, a process our deleted domain guide covers stage by stage, and at the moment the registry releases it, the service fires registration attempts through its drop-catching connections. If it wins the race, the domain is registered to you.
What does a backorder cost?
Pricing differs by service, but at the major ones placing a backorder is free, and you pay only if the service actually secures the name. If you're the only customer who backordered it, a flat fee usually settles it. If several people backordered the same name, the service puts it up for auction, open only to the backorderers at some services and to any bidder at others, and the winner pays the auction price.
Do backorders actually work?
Often, but nothing is promised. Success depends on how contested the name is and how strong your service's catching infrastructure is, and the domain may never drop at all: owners renew late, redeem during the redemption period, or the name's registrar auctions it off before it ever drops. Treat a backorder as buying a chance at the name, not the name itself.
