The feature set isn’t locked yet: Beta 1 lands October 20–22, and the roadmap says plainly that being on the list “doesn’t necessarily mean each will make it into the final release.” Still, the direction is clear. This is a release about working together, keeping your site safer, and styling more without code.

Here’s what’s most likely to ship:

Ipsum, a new default theme. A deliberately minimal “blank canvas” for bloggers, kept simple so it’s easy for AI tools to work with too. It also ends the year-based naming that started with Twenty Ten in 2010: 15 themes over 16 years, with no Twenty Eighteen or Twenty Twenty-Six.

Suggestion mode for Notes. Propose edits that the author accepts or rejects, like “Suggesting” in Google Docs.

Form styling in Global Styles. Style buttons, text fields, dropdowns and labels without writing CSS.

New blocks. A Description List block for glossaries and specs, and a Table of Contents block that’s finally close to stable.

Security upgrades. Better application passwords, a new Secrets API for API keys, and early work on “sudo mode.”

A friendlier admin. Clearer error messages, more accessible notices, and a cleaner, more consistent set of icons.

AI is the interesting twist. After 7.0 put the AI building blocks into Core, 7.2 does most of its AI work outside Core, in the official AI plugin, where features have to prove people actually use them before they’re merged.

Note: This post is based on the official 7.2 roadmap and work in progress as of September 24, 2026. Scope can still change during the beta, and features that aren’t ready by the Beta 1 cutoff typically move to a later release rather than being dropped. For current status, check the Make WordPress Core blog and each feature’s tracking issue on GitHub.

WordPress 7.2 release date and timeline

WordPress 7.2 is scheduled for December 8–10, 2026, with December 9 as the proposed date. It’s the third major release of 2026, after 7.0 “Armstrong” in May and 7.1 in August.

Date (2026)

Milestone

December 8–10

WordPress 7.2 release

November 17–19

Release Candidate 1 (feature set final)

October 20–22

Beta 1 (feature freeze)

Source: WordPress 7.2 development cycle

For the first time, the release itself will be livestreamed. Instead of pushing the button on stage at an event, the release team will run a public Zoom webinar where anyone can watch 7.2 ship and ask questions. Details on how to join will be shared closer to release day.

The real cutoff is Beta 1 on October 20–22. Anything not merged by then almost always waits for the next release. That makes the next four weeks the most important stretch of the cycle, and the best time to test and give feedback.

Matt Mullenweg is the release lead, with David Baumwald coordinating. George Mamadashvili and Peter Wilson are the tech leads. The new default theme is led by Henrique Iamarino (design) and Maggie Cabrera and Carolina Nymark (development).

WordPress 7.2 features: what’s on track

Everything below is on the official roadmap and actively being built. Each section has a Try it now note showing how to see the feature today on a local install or in WordPress Playground (a free WordPress that runs in your browser), even where the feature is still unfinished.

Ipsum: a new kind of default theme

WordPress 7.2 comes with a new default theme called Ipsum, named after the lorem ipsum placeholder text. It breaks two traditions. There’s no year in the name (it takes the slot first announced as Twenty Twenty-Seven), and it’s intentionally minimal: a blank canvas built around blogging, meant to be reshaped from day one.

Seven color style variations named for times of day, from Blue Hour and Sunrise to Golden Hour and After Hours.

Headers, hero sections and sidebars when you want them, and not before.

Almost no custom CSS. The goal is that every style lives in Global Styles, where you can change it without code.

Every color and type combination meets WCAG AA accessibility contrast standards.

Matt Mullenweg has also described Ipsum as agent-friendly, meaning easy for AI tools to work with. Contributors are discussing what that should mean, such as clearly named patterns and colors, so an AI assistant can tell a “Footer with newsletter” pattern from a “Hero” without guessing.

What this means for you: New sites start clean instead of looking like a template demo, and styling happens in the Site Editor rather than in a child theme.

Try it now: Open the Ipsum Playground demo, which comes with demo content already loaded. For a local site, download the ZIP from the Ipsum GitHub repository and activate it under Appearance → Themes. It works on WordPress 7.1 and later.

Notes gets suggestion mode (and emoji reactions)

This is the headline collaboration feature. Notes, the block-level comments added in WordPress 6.9, gains a Suggest mode. Reviewers type straight into the post, but their changes don’t overwrite anything. Each edit appears as a highlighted suggestion that the author accepts or rejects with one click.

It handles two kinds of change:

Text suggestions: typing, deleting, pasting, and bold, italic or link formatting.

Structural suggestions: adding, removing or moving blocks, or changing things like a heading level or alignment.

Notes is also getting lighter-weight feedback. Emoji reactions let a teammate answer a note with a quick heart, party, smile, eyes or rocket instead of writing a reply. A third piece in the works moves notes into the margin next to the content they refer to, instead of a sidebar you have to open.

What this means for you: Editorial review can happen entirely inside WordPress. No more exporting drafts to Google Docs, or pasting “change paragraph 3 to…” into Slack.

Try it now: Suggestion mode is under active review in Gutenberg as a nine-part set of changes. Its developers bundled everything into one test build that opens in Playground with nothing to install. Emoji reactions can be tested from their own pull request.

Style your forms without CSS

Buttons, text fields, dropdowns and labels have always been the part of a site you couldn’t style without custom CSS. WordPress 7.2 adds them to Global Styles, so you set their look once and it applies across your whole site. Work is also underway on interactive states for inputs, such as how a field looks when someone clicks into it.

What this means for you: Contact forms and search boxes finally match the rest of your design, even if your form plugin’s defaults don’t.

Try it now: Install the latest Gutenberg plugin (24.0 or later). Then open Appearance → Editor → Styles, where the new label, text input and select options appear next to the existing button styles.

See where a block’s style comes from

Today, a block’s settings panel often shows empty fields even when the block clearly has a font size or color. That’s because the value comes from your site-wide styles, not the block itself. WordPress 7.2 aims to show those inherited values right in the block settings, so you can see what you’re actually getting before you change it.

What this means for you: Less guessing why a heading looks the way it does, and fewer accidental one-off overrides.

Try it now: In the Gutenberg plugin, go to Gutenberg → Experiments and turn on Global Styles inheritance in the block inspector. Description List can be tested from its pull request.

A friendlier, more accessible admin

A set of smaller changes that together make wp-admin easier to live with:

Clearer error messages. When a post fails to save, the editor explains what went wrong in plain language. A proposed follow-up adds a “Copy” button and a “Show details” toggle, so you can paste the exact error into a support ticket.

Accessible admin notices. The yellow, red and green notices at the top of admin screens are being reworked so screen readers announce them properly.

Stop boxes from moving by accident. A new Screen Options toggle lets you turn off drag-to-reorder for dashboard and editor boxes, which is easy to trigger by mistake on a phone.

A refreshed Omnibar. The admin bar that became persistent in 7.1 swaps the old Dashicons icon font for crisp SVG icons, in both the admin bar and the sidebar menu, and frees up space on the right.

“On This Day.” A new dashboard widget that resurfaces posts you published on this date in past years. It was deferred from 7.1.

There’s also deeper admin work, like rebuilding the post sidebar on the new DataForm system and making the Site Editor extensible for plugins. You won’t notice most of it yet, but it’s the foundation for the next few releases.

What this means for you: Fewer “something went wrong” dead ends, and an admin that behaves better on mobile and with assistive technology.

Try it now: The clearer save-failure messages are already in the Gutenberg plugin. To trigger one on a local site, open your browser’s developer tools, set the network to Offline, and click Save. The new admin icons can be previewed in Playground from the core pull request.

Security: application passwords, a Secrets API, and “sudo mode”

7.2 has more security work than any release in a while, and most of it is aimed at site owners, not just developers.

Application passwords get safer. These are the passwords you create for apps and integrations, such as the WordPress mobile app, automation tools, or an AI assistant connecting to your site. WordPress will email you when a new one is created, so a stranger can’t quietly add one. There’s also a cleaner interface, safer defaults for new passwords, and better detection of local development sites, where HTTPS usually isn’t set up.

The Secrets API stores API keys properly. Right now, when you paste an API key into a plugin’s settings (OpenAI, Stripe, Mailchimp), it’s usually saved as plain text in your database. It shows up in every backup and every staging copy. The new Secrets API gives plugins one standard, encrypted place to keep those keys. In 7.2 it’s plumbing for plugin developers plus WP-CLI commands. A screen for managing your keys is planned for 7.3.

Sudo mode asks for your password again before risky actions. Even when you’re already logged in, WordPress would ask you to confirm your password before something high-stakes, similar to GitHub or your bank. That limits the damage from a stolen login session. This one is the earliest-stage of the three: the proposal and the list of covered actions haven’t been published yet.

What this means for you: AI tools and integrations need credentials, and 7.2 makes creating, storing and using them less risky.

Try it now: Application password improvements will show up in nightly builds. On a local site, install the WordPress Beta Tester plugin and switch to Bleeding edge nightlies, then open Users → Profile → Application Passwords. The Secrets API ships as a feature plugin first, so watch for its release.

AI: adoption first, Core later

After 7.0 added the AI building blocks to Core (the AI Client, the Abilities API and Connectors), 7.2 takes a different approach. Most new AI work happens in the official AI plugin, and features only move into Core once they’ve shown real value. The roadmap puts it bluntly: AI in 7.2 is “not guaranteed for Core.”

What’s being built:

More abilities, especially for content. Abilities are the list of actions an AI assistant is allowed to take on your site. New ones cover finding, creating and updating content.

Easier MCP connections. MCP is the standard that lets tools like Claude or ChatGPT connect to your site. The WordPress MCP Adapter is being updated to the latest version of the spec, published in the Plugin Directory, and made switchable from the AI plugin’s settings.

Better context. Shared “embeddings” support powers semantic search, which finds posts by meaning rather than exact keywords.

Streaming. AI responses appear word by word as they’re generated, instead of all at once after a wait.

Agent identities. Each AI agent gets its own auditable account and permissions, so you can see exactly what it did.

What this means for you: You pick which AI features to install, and those that reach Core will have been tested on real sites first.

Try it now: Install the AI plugin (version 1.3.0, released August 18) on a local site to try the current experiments, like content translation and slug generation. For 7.2 it’s off the table, and the approach is changing. Until now, editors’ browsers synced changes directly with each other. That meant WordPress couldn’t tell who made which edit, and changes from outside the editor (the REST API or WP-CLI) could wipe out someone’s work.

The new plan routes every change through your WordPress server, which records who made each edit, checks their permissions and resolves conflicts. Three candidate approaches are being tested in an experimental plugin. The post says plainly it’s “not ready for Core inclusion today.”

Our take: Suggestion mode and Notes cover how most teams actually work together: one person writes, others review. Real-time co-editing is worth waiting for if the result is safer.

Keep an eye on suggestion mode

Suggestion mode is the 7.2 headline, but it’s also a large feature: nine connected changes, all still in review four weeks before Beta 1. If it isn’t merged in time, emoji reactions and the Notes polish could still ship without it. We’ll update this post after Beta 1.

How to try WordPress 7.2 features today

You don’t have to wait for December. Use a local or throwaway site, never your live one.

Create a local site with a tool like Local, WordPress Studio or MAMP. Or skip this step and use WordPress Playground in your browser.

Install the Gutenberg plugin. New editor features appear here weeks or months before they reach a WordPress release.

Turn on experiments under Gutenberg → Experiments. For this release, look at Experimental blocks (Table of Contents) and Global Styles inheritance in the block inspector.

Switch to nightly builds with the WordPress Beta Tester plugin to see admin and security changes as they’re committed.

Install Beta 1 (October 20–22) from the same plugin once it’s out. That’s when the feature list stops changing.

Features still in review, like suggestion mode or the Description List block, can be opened from their pull request in Playground with one click. If something breaks, the WordPress team wants to hear about it: reports during beta are how features get fixed before launch.

The bottom line

WordPress 7.2 is a release about trust: trusting reviewers to suggest edits without breaking a post, trusting integrations with your credentials, and trusting AI features that have proven themselves in a plugin before reaching Core. Add a new default theme, form styling and two long-requested blocks, and there’s plenty to look forward to, even if real-time collaboration waits another cycle.

As always, test on a staging or local site before updating, and give plugins a week or two to catch up after December 9. If you’d rather someone else handle updates, backups and PHP versions, that’s what managed WordPress hosting is for.

WordPress 7.2 FAQ

When will WordPress 7.2 be released?

December 8–10, 2026, with December 9 as the proposed date.
