You know, most small business owners and marketers start their days with the <strong>analytics dashboard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They try to make sense of the numbers, charts, and vague traffic sources like &#8220;social&#8221; or &#8220;direct&#8221; to determine what\u2019s working for the business, but these surface-level metrics don\u2019t tell the whole story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need something to dig deeper. UTM parameters help you do just that. For the rest, you\u2019ll see the appropriate source names. If you want to dig deeper, you can use the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/google-search-console\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Google Search Console<\/a> to find out the keywords driving traffic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that not <em>all <\/em>of them are manually tagged. Search engines (in this case), and some sites auto-append their UTM parameters to promote themselves and to help users see the traffic source from their website easily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Information Can UTM Links Carry?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Each click on a UTM link carries information about where a click came from, which campaign triggered it, and even which specific element caught your visitor&#8217;s attention. It all depends on how you build out the link<em> (yes, it\u2019s manual work).<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Say you have this link to promote on social media:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201chttps:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/hosting\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clicking on this link right now will only provide vague information like \u201csocial\u201d or \u201corganic\u201d in analytics. Here\u2019s how you can add data to the link:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Campaign source (\u201cutm_source\u201d) \u2013 Required<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cutm_source\u201d records where your visitors originated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you mark a link with \u201cutm_source=newsletter,\u201d you&#8217;re essentially saying, &#8220;This visitor came from our email list.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark it as \u201cutm_source=instagram\u201d instead of newsletter, and Google will show the source as Instagram (even if the click <em>actually<\/em> came from your newsletter).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Campaign medium (\u201cutm_medium\u201d) \u2013 Required<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With \u201cutm_source,\u201d you know where a user came from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But did they arrive via a paid advertisement (\u201cutm_medium=cpc\u201d)? Through an organic social media post (\u201cutm_medium=social\u201d)? Or perhaps through your <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dreamhost.com\/blog\/email-open-rate\/\" rel=\"noopener\">email marketing efforts<\/a> (\u201cutm_medium=email\u201d)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting \u201cutm_medium\u201d will help you determine the <em>vehicle<\/em> through which the traffic was delivered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3.
